Our Grand Canyon Helicopter Tour from Las Vegas

I’m excited to write this post because this post is about the number one highlight of our whole honeymoon! Our Grand Canyon Helicopter Tour from Las Vegas!

We knew that we wanted to see the Grand Canyon by helicopter since we first booked our wedding and we planned on visiting Las Vegas (where we had been several times before) to do a helicopter tour.

As you know, I’m a very organised traveller and I like to book in advance and so we booked our tour with Papillon Tours through Tour America. Papillon offer a number of Grand Canyon experiences, all at different price points but I had heard many times before that the Grand Celebration Tour was the best one to do, so we booked it!

Papillon Grand Celebration Grand Canyon Tour

So what do you get with this tour? Well, this particular tour is one of the more expensive tours to the Canyon that Papillon offer but its also one of the best. As part of your price you get:

  • Return transfers to Boulder City for your flight
  • The comfort and safety of a top of the range helicopter
  • Helicopter flight to the Grand Canyon with a landing at the base of the Canyon
  • Champange breakfast at the base of the Canyon

We chose to go on the early tour and so we were collected the morning of our flight at 5:30am. Our transfer was bang on time and once we reached the flight terminal, we were checked in quickly (you will need your passports) and we were shown a safety video demonstration.

Afterward, we met our pilot and the other guests we’d be flying with and we made our way to our helicopter. We were thrilled to get the front seats on the helicopter as it meant we had the best views but no matter where you were sitting, you wouldn’t have been disappointed – the scenery was amazing! Below is our pilot Blane photo-bombing me! πŸ˜€ I made a great Co-Pilot!

Grand Canyon Helicopter Tour – The Flight

I had never been in a helicopter before and I was definitely anxious about going in one for the first time but once I had done my safety briefing and saw how confident and worry free our pilot was, I knew we were in safe hands!

The flight was about 45 minutes to the Canyon and the views were incredible. We flew over the Colorado River, Hoover Dam and even Lake Mead and it was just breathtaking. Along the way our pilot pointed out areas of interest and we really learnt a lot. I was also really impressed by how smooth the flight was. I had an impression in my head that being in a helicopter meant a bumpy ride but we had no turbulence at all.

Exploring the Grand Canyon

Our landing down into the base of the Canyon was SO thrilling! I’ve never done anything like it and I couldn’t wait to get out and explore! The view from the bottom was just WOW and we couldn’t get enough of it. I was speechless!

We had plenty of time to get photographs and it wasn’t overcrowded at all. After taking some much anticipated shots, we headed to the shaded area where our pilot had set up our delicious champagne breakfast. It was just perfect.

The breakfast came in cute little wicker picnic baskets and the quality of the food was fantastic. We had chopped apple, granola and yogurt, orange juice, a muffin and of course – champagne! Talk about being spoilt!

Unfortunately by the time we finished eating, it was time to head on our merry way but not before we got 1-20 more photos! πŸ˜€ We just couldn’t get enough!

En-route back to Boulder City we went out a different way and I loved that we got to see something different to the outbound journey. I’d say overall we had approx 30 minutes in the Canyon so its important to use the time well as it does go fast.

Once we got back to the terminal, we said goodbye to our pilot and purchased some refreshments (and of course a magnet!) while we waited for our transfer back to Vegas.

The amazing thing about the whole experience was that we were back at our hotel by 11am and we had our whole day ahead of us to enjoy. I loved that as the last time we had done the Canyon, we did it by bus tour and it was such a long day. It also didn’t compare to the helicopter experience and I can honestly say, hand on heart, the Grand Celebration Helicopter tour is 150% better than the bus tours.

Its a special once in a lifetime experience and it was the cherry on top of our incredible honeymoon. The highlight for us both.

  1. Oh I have always wanted to do a helicopter tour and I have the Grand Canyon one on my bucket list and it has been there for years. The views are just stunningly beautiful. I am curious though as to the cost of this type of tour. I know helicopter tours can be really expensive but sometimes it is worth it.

  2. Canyon is definitely in my bucket list but I always thought of covering by foot. A helicopter ride is a dream for me. I will check out this tour group if I am there.

  3. Wow! What a fantastic experience!! I had a few nervous moments the first time I went in a helicopter too – now I love it, but that might be because I’d only do it when the weather is fine and calm! It must have been wonderful to view the Canyon from above – your photos are stunning – but having a champagne brekkie as well would make it really special!
